What is Zip World Snowdonia?

Zip World operates several sites across North Wales but the Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog is arguably the most unique. Bounce Below takes place in a vast underground cavern — one of the largest in Europe — strung with enormous illuminated nets at different levels. You bounce, slide and zip your way between levels in a cathedral of Victorian slate, the walls lit in shifting colours around you.

It is simultaneously ridiculous and completely wonderful. Children love it. Adults who expected to feel too dignified for it love it even more. Sessions last approximately one hour and booking in advance is strongly recommended — this one sells out regularly, especially in school holidays and at weekends.

Titan — Underground Zip Lines

If Bounce Below is the cheerful option, Titan is its more serious sibling.

Titan takes you on a series of underground zip lines through the vast chambers of the slate mine — some of the longest underground zip lines in the world. You descend through the darkness with the mine walls illuminated around you, the scale of the caverns gradually revealing itself as you go deeper underground.

It is dramatic, fast and genuinely impressive. The Victorian engineering of the mine — the tunnels, the chambers, the old machinery still visible in places — adds a layer of atmosphere that no purpose-built adventure park could replicate.

Fforest Coaster

For those who prefer their adventures in daylight, the Fforest Coaster runs through the woodland above the slate caverns — a twin-track alpine coaster with views across Blaenau Ffestiniog and the surrounding mountains.

It is a completely different experience from the underground attractions but no less enjoyable — particularly for families with younger children who may not meet the height requirements for the cavern experiences.

Blaenau Tramway

A gentler option and a genuine piece of local history — the Blaenau Tramway takes you on a guided tour through the slate landscape above the town, with views across the Moelwyn mountains and the Ffestiniog valley.

It is a great choice if you want to understand the history of the area without the physical demands of a walk, and the guides bring the extraordinary story of the Welsh slate industry to life in a way that genuinely resonates.

• Opening times: Zip World is open most days year-round, with extended hours during school holidays and peak season. Always check the Zip World website for current opening times before visiting — they can vary.

• Booking: Book online in advance. Bounce Below and Titan in particular sell out regularly, especially during weekends, school holidays and summer. Walking up on the day is possible for some experiences but not guaranteed.

• Parking: Free on-site parking is available at the Slate Caverns. Arrive early during peak periods as the car park fills quickly.

• Getting there from the cottage: From Tanygrisiau, follow the road down into Blaenau Ffestiniog and follow signs for Zip World Llechwedd. The whole journey takes approximately 15 minutes.

How Long Do You Need?

This depends entirely on which experiences you book and how many people are in your group. As a general guide:

Half day (3–4 hours) — ideal for one or two main experiences plus lunch at the on-site café. This works well if you want to combine Zip World with an afternoon walk or drive to another attraction.

Full day (5–6 hours) — if you want to do multiple experiences, explore the outdoor areas, have a relaxed lunch and browse the on-site shops without rushing. Families with children often find a full day works best.

What to Wear

Underground temperature in the slate caverns stays at around 10–12 degrees year-round regardless of outside weather. Even on a hot summer day, you will feel cold inside the mine.

Wear warm layers that you do not mind getting slightly dusty. Closed-toe shoes are required for all underground experiences — sandals and flip flops are not permitted. Helmets are provided for all underground activities.
