Snowdonia Travel Essentials: What You Actually Need for a Comfortable Stay

Nobody packs perfectly for Snowdonia the first time.

They either bring too much — enormous rucksacks full of gear for every conceivable eventuality, half of which never leaves the cottage — or too little, arriving in trainers and a light jacket and discovering within the first hour that Snowdonia has opinions about this.

This guide is the honest version. What you actually need, what you can buy locally when you get here and what you can confidently leave at home. Written specifically for guests staying at Pen-y-Bryn cottage in Tanygrisiau, near Blaenau Ffestiniog, where the mountains start at the end of the road and the nearest outdoor gear shop is in Betws-y-Coed.

The Non-Negotiables — Bring These No Matter What

Waterproof jacket

This is the single most important item on this list and the one most often underestimated by first-time Snowdonia visitors. Not a shower-resistant jacket. Not a windbreaker that might cope with light rain. A proper waterproof — seam-sealed, breathable and capable of handling sustained Welsh mountain rain without complaint.

Snowdonia is one of the wettest parts of the United Kingdom. This is partly why it is so extraordinarily green and partly why a proper waterproof is not optional regardless of what the forecast says when you leave home.

Walking boots

Proper ankle-supporting, waterproof walking boots for any walk above the valley floor. The paths above Tanygrisiau are rocky, uneven and wet underfoot for much of the year. Trainers work for the village. They do not work for the quarry tracks, the reservoir path in wet weather or anything involving a summit.

If you do not already own walking boots and are planning any serious walking, buying a pair before you arrive is significantly better than buying them in Betws-y-Coed the morning of your first big walk. Boots need breaking in. New boots on a long mountain walk are one of the more avoidable ways to have a bad day.

Warm layers

Temperatures at altitude in Snowdonia are consistently lower than in the valley. A base layer, a mid layer and a waterproof outer layer is the correct system regardless of the season. Even in July, the summit of Snowdon can feel like a different country from the car park at the bottom.

Headtorch

More useful than you expect. For early morning starts on mountain walks, for exploring the cottage grounds at night and for the general discovery that rural Wales after dark is significantly darker than wherever you came from.

For Walking Specifically

Trekking poles

Optional but increasingly valued by most walkers once they have tried them. Particularly useful on descents and on any walk involving loose slate or wet rock — both of which appear regularly in Snowdonia. Lightweight collapsible poles pack easily and make a genuine difference on longer days.

OS Map and compass

Or OS Maps downloaded offline on your phone before you leave — essential for any walk above the valley floor where mobile signal becomes unreliable. The Snowdonia national park OS Explorer maps OL17 and OL18 cover the area around the cottage. Download them before you arrive, not when you are standing on a hillside wondering which path goes where.

Small daypack

A 20-25 litre pack is ideal for day walks — enough for waterproofs, food, water, first aid kit and any extra layers without being cumbersome. Bigger packs encourage overpacking. Smaller packs encourage optimism about the weather. 20-25 litres is the sweet spot.

Blister kit

Compeed blister plasters. Bring more than you think you need. This is non-negotiable advice from anyone who has spent three days of a walking holiday managing blisters that proper preparation would have prevented entirely.

For Wild Swimming

If you are planning any wild swimming — and with Tanygrisiau Reservoir two minutes from the door, you probably should — the following makes the experience significantly better than the alternative:

• Wetsuit or swimsuit — a thin summer wetsuit extends your comfortable time in cold mountain water from approximately 30 seconds to something genuinely enjoyable. Not essential but strongly recommended for anything beyond a quick dip.

• Dry robe or changing robe — the single best investment in wild swimming kit available. You will look slightly ridiculous. You will not care even slightly, because you will be warm.

• Water shoes — lake shores are rocky. This is not a beach. Bare feet on slate is an experience you will have exactly once before deciding that water shoes were worth every penny.

For Mountain Biking

• Helmet — non-negotiable. Full-face for Antur Stiniog downhill trails. Standard trail helmet for everything else.

• Gloves — the quarry tracks above Blaenau Ffestiniog are loose slate. Gloves are useful for both grip and the inevitable moments of unplanned contact with the ground.

• Repair kit — inner tubes, tyre levers, mini pump and multi-tool. Mobile signal on the upper quarry tracks is unreliable. Being able to fix a puncture independently is not optional. See our mountain biking guide for full details on riding near the cottage.

What to Leave at Home

• Umbrella — genuinely useless in mountain conditions. Wind makes umbrellas decorative at best and actively counterproductive at worst. Your waterproof jacket is the umbrella.

• Cotton base layers — cotton absorbs moisture and stays wet. Merino wool or synthetic base layers dry quickly and regulate temperature. This matters more than it sounds when you are three hours into a wet mountain walk.

• Unnecessary luggage — the cottage is well equipped. You do not need to bring your own towels, bedding, kitchen equipment or anything that is not specific to your activities. Pack light and use the space for walking gear.

Where to Shop If You Forgot Something

Blaenau Ffestiniog — 5 minutes

The Co-op and Morrisons Daily cover groceries and everyday essentials. For walking basics — socks, waterproofs, walking poles — the town has limited options but is the closest starting point.

Betws-y-Coed — 25 minutes

The outdoor gear capital of Snowdonia. Multiple dedicated outdoor shops stock a full range of walking boots, waterproofs, base layers, maps, poles, headtorches and everything else you might need. If you have forgotten something important or want to upgrade before a big walk, Betws-y-Coed is the correct destination.

Porthmadog — 20 minutes

Good outdoor gear options alongside the full range of supermarkets — Tesco, Aldi and Lidl — for a proper resupply if you want to stock the cottage fridge properly.

A Note on the Weather

Pack for rain. Pack for cold. Pack for wind. And then, when the sun comes out — as it does, often and brilliantly in Snowdonia — enjoy it as the bonus it genuinely is rather than the expectation you arrived with.

The guests who enjoy Snowdonia most are almost always the ones who came prepared for the worst and were delighted by anything better. The guests who have the hardest time are the ones who packed for the forecast and discovered that Snowdonia has not read it.
